Support of Assembly Bill 388 - Paid Family Medical Leave

Who Needs Paid Family and Medical Leave?

Currently, many workers lack access to paid family leave, with only 27% of private sector workers having this benefit. Among low-wage workers, primarily women and people of color, 95% have no access to paid family leave. A significant portion of employees report having no paid time off to care for a seriously ill family member. As our population ages, the demand for caregiving is increasing, and many struggle to balance these responsibilities with paid work. Access to paid leave is crucial for economic stability and support for families, workers, and communities.

Benefits to Businesses and Global Competitiveness:

- Paid family and medical leave has proven successful in various states and businesses, enhancing productivity, employee morale, and retention.

- The U.S. is the only Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) country without a national paid leave policy, which impacts global competitiveness. A national policy could level the playing field for smaller businesses and foster a more robust economy.

- Investing in paid family and medical leave is essential for supporting working families and promoting economic growth.

Tell the Legislature and Governor Lombardo:

We, the residents and workers of Nevada, respectfully request your support for Assembly Bill 388, which seeks to establish a framework for Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) for employees in our state. This essential legislation would provide 12 weeks of paid leave to workers during medical emergencies, allowing them the necessary time to care for their loved ones without the fear of losing income or their employment.

Why AB388 Matters:

1. Protecting Working Families: In our vibrant state, many families are one medical emergency away from financial peril. AB388 will ensure that Nevadans can attend to critical medical needs without the added stress of job loss or financial instability.

2. A Step Toward Equity: The introduction of paid family medical leave is not only a matter of economic stability; it is a question of fairness. All workers deserve the right to care for themselves and their families during challenging times without jeopardizing their livelihoods.

3. Support for Employee Well-Being: Studies show that paid leave leads to healthier families and workplaces. Employees who feel supported in their time of need are more likely to return to work healthier, more focused, and ready to contribute to their employers and the Nevada economy.

4. Timely and Necessary Reform: The current landscape leaves too many Nevadans vulnerable during medical crises. AB388 addresses this urgent need and would mark a significant advancement for our workforce.

We believe that being able to care for family members in times of need should never be a source of anxiety over job security. Emergencies and health concerns are a part of life, and Nevadans should be able to address them without fearing the loss of income or employment.

So, we would like to ask you to support Assembly Bill 388 and bring this critical change to our state. Together, let us create a healthier, more equitable Nevada for all its workers.
